“So what have you done with the notes?” Jack asked as they swept up and out from Balance City.
Dog was concentrating and took a moment to answer. “Hmmm?”
“The notes I gave you…”
Dog looked sideways at him, peering through a couple of loose strands of hair uncomprehendingly. A moment later, light broke. “Ah, shit. I knew I forgot something.”
“You what?” Jack sat up in his seat.
Dog broke into a big grin. “Ha! Got you.” He patted his jacket. “Safe and sound.”
Jack settled back into his seat, muttering under his breath.
Dog shook his head, still grinning, and turned his attention back to the panel in front. “Lighten up, Jack. You were always too easy.”
Jack crossed his arms and kept his attention on the sky in front of them.
“I was doing some thinking last night,” Dog said after a while. “I was remembering stuff from back on those missions, some of the weird stuff that used to happen around you. Me, it’s easy to see how I ended up doing what I’m doing. You, it was a different story. Not that we knew each other that well back then. No more than any of the crew did. But remembering those things, it makes a weird kind of sense.”
“How so?” said Jack, wondering where this was going.
“Well, you know, running into each other out here. Kinda weird, isn’t it? Me being the guy who just happened to have what you needed. But that’s the kind of stuff that used to happen around you. You always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Well, it was more that you weren’t in the wrong place. I didn’t figure it for anything special, just luck. Some people are naturally lucky, right? It was creepy, though. The other guys felt the same way. Not that we used to talk about it much back in the unit. I guess we didn’t want to jinx it.”
He glanced over at Jack, then looked back out of the front screen. “So I guess what I’m saying is, I feel kind of lucky to be along for the ride.”
Jack turned to look at Dog’s pale face, but his companion was looking studiedly at the panel in front of him.
“Hmmmm,” said Jack, turning his attention back to the front as well.
The journey up to the orbital seemed longer this time, and the rest of the trip was spent in silence, making it seem longer still. All the while thoughts of Maximilian Aire and Dr. Heering flitted through his mind. The sense of guilt was almost palpable. Jack was relieved when the bristly shape of the orbital appeared and grew ever larger in the front viewscreen. They bumped to a stop, and this time Jack stayed where he was, waiting for the thump and jolt of the connecting tube to match the hatch. He was about to unstrap himself and stand, when Dog waved him down. Dog manipulated something on the front panel, and seconds later there was another jolt and bump.
